ANALYSIS OF INDIAN AGRICULTURAL WEB PORTALS FOR DISSEMINATING INFORMATION TO FARMERS

Abstract:

Agriculture related information is available in abundance on Internet. This Information is available on Web portals, web sites, Digital Libraries and Wikis. They are helpful to farmers, agri-business, Agriculture academics and Research Stations. These vary considerably in quantity and services offered.

However there seem to be very few studies where these are subjected to Qualitative analysis with a view to help for better design and usability of services. In this article a qualitative analysis of a set of randomly selected Indian web sites has been presented. This could be very useful to designers of agriculture web sites in zeroing on a pattern or discover a inherent frame work that could form the core of such websites [3]. Guidelines generated should prove useful to web designers for this domain.

More than 100 Indian Agri web sites were considered in the analysis. They were compared on the basis of selected parameters. Categorization schemes are proposed. There are very few web sites which provide multilingual facility. Very few web sites provide mobile applications facilities. Among the services E-trading services appeared to be very poor in case of agriculture. The emphasis is on advisory are seen to high. It is interesting to note that Agri Tourism as a service seems to be dominating in the international context.
